I have been on Lean/Agile project teams off and on for the last seven years. During that time I have met an assortment of Agile Gurus peddling their mantra, silver bullets, charlatanism garbed as expertise and other travesties to gullible clients desperate to go Agile. Very few had real experience taking projects to successful completion in the client's specific domain and to that extent a very limited appreciation for the challenges involved in doing so. Often the prescription provided to the project team required us all to struggle with force-fitting our problems into a solution that just did not mesh. We were warned of the dire consequences of not following due process- the Guru had coached hundreds of teams and knew what they were talking about. The Scrum Master was left with the unpalatable job of evangelizing the mantra he or she did not find particularly credible or useful. The unenthusiastic team went through the motions of being Agile - shuffling their task cards [...]

"Rookhi Sookhy Khai kay Thandi beer Pee, Na Veykh paraayee chonparian, na Tarssain jee" and live to be 98 like Sardar Khushwant Singh. Coming on to 98 and still earning more than I did in my younger days, people ask me how I manage to do it. They regard me as an expert on longevity. I have pronounced on the subject before; I will repeat it with suitable amendments based on my experience in the past two years. Earlier I had written that longevity is in one’s genes: children of long-living parents are likely to live longer than those born to short-lived parents. This did not happen in my own family. My parents who died at 90 and 94 had five children, four sons and a daughter. The first to go was the youngest of the siblings. Next went my sister who was the fourth. My elder brother who was three years older than me went a couple of years ago. Two of us remain; I, who will soon be 98, and my younger brother, a retired Brigadier three years younger than me and in much better [...]

His wife and daughter later died when robbers tried to rape them. The wife killed the young daughter and later knocked her head to death.100 years later, a guy was good for nothing except going to find prostitutes and spending all his dad money. As a result, he was chased away from home. In the wood, he saw a group of young ladies dancing and singing. He followed them to a temple. Unknow to him, these ladies are actually ghosts. With 65 sessions and over 100 writers, the Karachi Literature Festival promises another sell-out yearKARACHI: Shobha De, Vikram Seth, Hanif Kureishi are just a few of the big-ticket names for the Karachi Literature Festival this year. Small wonder that the organisers were all smiles at the press conference on Thursday to announce the programme of the yearly event, which is scheduled for February 11 and 12 at Karachi’s Carlton Hotel. The British Council’s director for programmes, Martin Fryer, said that the festival has “almost become an institution in Pakistan”. Perhaps not an institution just yet – this will be only the third year – but few will dispute that it is one of the most important events for the city. In any case, it has the power to attract people from across the country, from media barons to socialites, young academics to veteran policy makers.A slew of writers from Pakistan and India are on the bill for this year’s festival. Oxford University Press [...]
Both girls are unwell and therefore it remained a quiet weekend.Aditi had a great review at school at the PTA- left me wondering why she is so difficult at times at home.Anushka's results at the Maths Olympiad have been declared. She is national 4th and class 1st. She has quit Abacus midway since she was not enjoying it. Her love for maths remains intact which we felt was more important.
Death creates a void. When someone dies a vacuum is created suddenly, and being totally with that vacuum you know that you also are that vacuum. What are you? What is your life? It's a total void. Not only is death a void, but life too is a void. This realisation is Nirvana. Buddha said that life is a void and void is truth and that forms are illusive and they have no existence. The formless is the only existence and it governs the form. The mind is formless, and is it not the mind that is ruling your body? For example, is the body or the mind moving a car? It is the mind. If the mind is not in the body, the body alone cannot do anything ... There is a greater formlessness overseeing entire Creation. You are the centre of that greater formlessness; whatever you call it. In ancient days people were asked to meditate in burial grounds. This gave a sense of dispassion, a feeling of void so your mind did not wander. In meditation you realise that you are not just the body, but [...]
... Gaming the System, that is. An alternate title would be: Journal Editors Behaving Badly. Here's the abstract of the article by Allen W. Wilhite and Eric A. Fong that appeared in Science: Coercive Citation in Academic Publishing Despite their shortcomings (1–4), impact factors continue to be a primary means by which academics “quantify the quality of science” (5). One side effect of impact factors is the incentive they create for editors to coerce authors to add citations to their journal. Coercive self-citation does not refer to the normal citation directions, given during a peer-review process, meant to improve a paper. Coercive self-citation refers to requests that (i) give no indication that the manuscript was lacking in attribution; (ii) make no suggestion as to specific articles, authors, or a body of work requiring review; and (iii) only guide authors to add citations from the editor's journal. This quote from an editor as a condition for [...]
Hi All, The following data points from the Venture Intelligence India Venture Capital Report-2011 report quantifies the resurgence of VC investments in India catalyzed by the well known excitement for the E-Commerce segment: Venture Capital firms invested about $1.09 billion over 209 deals in India during the twelve months ended December 2011 to touch all time high [...]
The Indian nation is in turmoil. The middle class is up in revolt. Especially the one active on the Internet. My gut feeling is that if Indian election were held on the Internet the UPA would have not got even 1% of the vote. Yet election after election has proven that the UPA somehow gets well above 30% of the vote. This has perplexed the intellectuals, especially the internet kind. They fail to understand when the opinion is obviously against the present government then why the hell does it keep winning? This leads them to an obvious answer. The Indian democracy is itself dysfunctional. Significant portion of Indian population is illiterate and extremely poor. These people are so poor that they would vote for even a dog if they are paid few 100 rupees (2-10 $). This is obviously a problem and Indian Internet Intelligentsia (referred to as 3Is) is obviously disgusted. Efforts are on to educate these uncouth about the perils of there actions. Yet it is proving to be [...]
FMCG, and IT have underperformed in this rally. Health Care is up 9.2% Real Estate leads at 29.7% Metals and Banks are at 27.8% and 27.2% respectively. Capital Goods is also up at 27.2% Somewhere in the middle are Autos at 16.94% and Oil / Gas at 15.4% The benchmark Sensex is at 13.9% Now, before we start getting excited about this rally, let us change the date to 31-st December 2010 and see how the performance looks like: So as you can see, on this scale FMCG is the sole leader and everything else is down. There is still lot of ground to be covered. Maybe there is some change happening and if the sectoral performance keeps improving in the coming weeks then we may be able to turn around for good.

By Anindya Sengupta and our bureau Feb. 3: If the political establishment is shell-shocked by the 2G verdict that by the Supreme Court's own admission addressed policy issues, few are saying so in public.UPA leaders did not want to play with fire a day before another court decides if home minister P. Chidambaram should be investigated to establish if he had played any role in the telecom scandal.BJP leaders familiar with the finer points of law expressed the fear in private that the verdict could have worrying consequences for the separation of powers.Foreign investors sounded the alarm and analysts forecast investment worth billions could be lost. Cries of foul play also arose with some of the affected operators saying other players are trying to poach their customers. (See Business)But few would speak out on the larger issues ' barring Somnath Chatterjee, the former Lok Sabha Speaker who had repeatedly spoken out against judicial activism if it threatened to undermine [...]
Scripscan:Andhra Bankcmp:110Code:532418Story:Andhra Bank was set up in 1923. It is in retail and corporate sector serving them since long time. The bank has done pretty well from 2008-2011 periods when the market was under recession. However,Andhra Bank has always been little cheaper in the market compared to other banks. It is a medium size, nationalized bank with 1550+ branches. The bank mainly operates in southern part of India. The bank is also focusing in insurance business in collaboration with bank of Baroda and L&G group of UK offering insurance under IndiafIrst.Andhra bank has been able to maintain the operating expenses at the same level. This is a good sign as banks faced heavy expenses on operations in recession time. Andhra bank has always been relatively underpriced compared to SBI, BoB, or PNB.The reason is that Andhra bank’s fundamentals show high variation. The bank is inherently sound but the lack of consistency in performance is taking its toll on the [...]
Scripscan:Zylog Systems Ltdcmp:480Code:532883Story:Zylog System (also called ZSL) is in IT business for last 15 years and has a good list of clientele in its portfolio. For a 15 year old company in IT, Zylog has not performed very well. However, its performance has been good for last 5 years. Current revenue at 916 crore is pretty good if you consider the rate at which it’s growing. It went IPO in 2007.Zylog system has seen excellent growth in last 5 years at a CAGR of 30%. The profit has grown by 33% CAGR in last 5 years. One concern is its zero growth from 2009 to 2010. However, the company grew well in FY2011. The FY2011 revenue is Rs 916 crore.Net profit margin, even though it has come down from 14% to 11%, it is still good as most of the IT firms have faced margin pressure because of slowdown in US and Europe. Current and quick ratios are fine. Most of the IT companies have robust current ratio and quick ratio.Debt-Equity ratio is higher for a software company. [...]
A DAMN GOOD EXPLANATIONThe wife came home early and found her husband in their bedroom making love to a very attractive young woman. And she was somewhat upset. 'You are a disrespectful pig!' she cried. 'How dare you do this to me -- a faithful wife, the mother of your children! I'm leaving you. I want a divorce right away!' And the husband replied, 'Hang on just a minute love so at least I can tell you what happened.' 'Fine, go ahead,' she sobbed,' but they'll be the last words you'll say to me!'And the husband began -- 'Well, I was getting into the car to drive home, and this young lady here asked me for a lift. She looked so down and out and defenseless that I took pity on her and let her into the car. I noticed that she was very thin, not well dressed and very dirty. She told me that she hadn't eaten for three days. So, in my compassion, I brought her home and warmed up the enchiladas I made for you last night, the ones you wouldn't eat because [...]
